You may not know much about an ancient Greek mathematician and inventor named Archimedes. But I bet you know the most famous thing he said.
The king of Syracuse once asked Archimedes to investigate a possible fraud. The king had hired some artisans to make a crown out of an ingot of pure gold. When he received it, the king feared the goldsmiths had swindled him by substituting silver for some of the gold.
Melting it down would have uncovered the truth, of course, but destroyed the crown in the process. Momentarily stumped, Archimedes decided to take a bath. When he got into the water, its level rose. âEureka!â he exclaimed â âI have found itâ in Greek. He realized that comparing the buoyancy of the crown and an equal weight of pure gold would answer the kingâs question.
Lynchburg, Monacans get housing grant funds
Lynchburg is receiving more than $1.1 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for affordable housing.
The city will receive $718,593 through the departmentâs Community Development Block Grants program and $413,856 through the departmentâs HOME Investment Partnerships program.
The CDBG program âprovides annual grants on a formula basis to states, cities, and counties to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment and expanding economic opportunities,â according to a news release from U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, announcing the round of more than $95.5 million total in HUD grants across Virginia.
âItâs just the most amazing professional honor that you could imagine,â Lowe said.
Friends, family and colleagues gathered for a brunch Wednesday to watch Lowe accept his award over Zoom in place of a large annual celebration that wouldâve brought thousands of agents together. Auditorium full of people or not, the award was still an honor.
âNobody deserves it more than he does,â Loweâs colleague Clayton Pilgrim said.
Lowe specializes in agriculture and farmland sales and has been working with Century 21 since 1998, building years of experience that have seen him close sales across the country. Pilgrim, who has worked alongside Lowe for about five years, said many see Lowe as a mentor in the business, and someone whose specialty fits perfectly with the Paris area.
